Kancare Program Noncompliant

Medicaid is a joint state and federal program. Five years ago, Governor Sam Brownback requested a waiver in order to privatize the state’s Medicaid program, calling it KanCare and handing control over to for-profit companies. In order to continue the private operation of Medicaid, Brownback and the state had to renew the waiver, which required a review by the Centers For Medicare and Medicaid Services.

This review found the KanCare program to be grossly noncompliant with federal regulations, including a severe lack of state oversight for the private companies, no comprehensive system for reporting or tracking critical incidents, and incorrect and inconsistent information and data reporting, among many other infractions.
